The lowdown on the latest lockdown launches in Milton Keynes

Despite the impact of the pandemic on hospitality, it’s really great to see so many new vendors that have launched in Milton Keynes over the past few months. I wrote a post back in October 2020 with food vendors you needed to try in the autumn and I thought I’d try and continue to do this quarterly to give you the lowdown on all the latest foodie news, menu updates and new openings in Milton Keynes. I don’t often get the time to do a write up of every single food vendor I try (though most of them get featured on my Instagram!) so I hope you’ll enjoy these round ups.

The first quarter of 2021 saw some great newbies launch in Milton Keynes including the much-loved Fratelli’s in Fenny Stratford and two Greek vendors. Keep reading to find out my verdict and get your pen and paper ready to add them to your bucket list…

DISCLAIMER: Some of these meals and experiences were gifted, but I wasn’t obliged to post about them on my blog.

New restaurants & vendors in Milton Keynes

Fratellis Bar & Restaurant, Fenny Stratford

If you are a member of my Facebook Community Group, Eat & Explore MK, you will have definitely seen the floods of posts every weekend about Fratellis which opened a few months ago in Fenny Stratford. Before you ask, they aren’t connected to Fratelli’s in Woburn! They describe themselves as a Mediterranean restaurant and due to lockdown restrictions, they are currently serving takeaway with an ‘Italian and Turkish Twist’ but will eventually open for dining it. The menu features Italian and Turkish-inspired burgers, wings, loaded fries and various small plates. There’s also an extensive cocktail menu and a kids offering!

My verdict? There’s nothing else like it in Milton Keynes, that’s for sure. We tried the Ottimo burger, Italian sausage burger, fries, Iberico scotch egg, wings and white chocolate arancini. It was all delicious and great to see a restaurant being creative with the menu and putting an interesting twist on classics! The fries were amazing too – too often fries are a bit of nothingness, but these were delicious. Crispy and loaded with seasoning and a sprinkle of parmesan.

Fratellis is open Wednesdays and Thursdays 4pm – 9pm, Friday 4pm – 10pm and Saturday and Sunday from 12pm. I would recommend calling to preorder because their slots fill up so quickly. You can find the menu on their website: www.fratellismk.co.uk

Greek Grill Café, Wolverton Mill

Greek Grill Café is a new Greek café in Wolverton Mill where the old Blue Mountain Yard unit was. It’s a bit of a dustbowl at the moment because none of the surrounding offices are open, but this little café sure is worth making a trip. We went for a walk with my parents in Ouse Valley Park and stopped for lunch at the end of our walk. We had a Souvlaki wrap each which was £6.95 and a perfectly filling lunch. I almost felt like I was sitting in a hot taverna in the Greek islands… Almost!

The people who run it are so lovely. I can’t wait until they are open fully as their breakfast menu also looks brilliant. Make sure you stop by for more than a cup of coffee!

Eating Greek, Wolverton

Yes, another Greek addition to Milton Keynes, and not to be confused with Eat IS Greek who still hold (for me!) the gold standard of Gyros in MK. Eating Greek has been open for about two months on Church Street in Wolverton. It’s currently operating as a takeaway, but will eventually be open for dining in when restrictions allow. It is going down a storm with members of my Community Group, so one sunny Sunday we decided to go and check it out for ourselves. We had the mixed Gyros which featured pork and chicken and it cost us £5.50.

The Gyros was really filling, packed with Tzatziki that made my tongue tingle and salty meat, however it just felt like something wasn’t there. It’s well worth a try if you’re local for sure, but for us, Eat is Greek still reigns supreme!

There’s no website at the moment, but you can follow them on Facebook for updates.

Sunday Lunch Club

I bloody love a Sunday roast, but when it’s just the two of you at home, it can feel like a bit of a chore to make as there’s SO MUCH. I wasn’t sure how keen I was on the idea of a Sunday roast takeaway, but Sunday Lunch Club has proved that it can be done and it can be done well. SLC is a reasonably priced, high-quality roast dinner takeaway. Everything is delivered to your door in foil trays and all you have to do is pop it in the over until it’s piping hot. WHack the gravy in the microwave and you’ve got yourself a Sunday roast. They really do take the stress out of a Sunday lunch!

We were so impressed by Sunday Lunch Club. The meat was absolutely delicious, vegetables were succulent and most importantly the cauliflower cheese was delicious.

Roasts are £20 for an adult and £10 for a child and there is MORE than enough food for seconds. Order via Facebook.

FrescoChef

FrescoChef is a new meal kit concept from Chef Javier. Everything is prepped and ready for you to finish off in the comfort of your own kitchen! It’s great for taking the stress out of midweek meals. I tried out two dishes: Chicken supreme with giant couscous, and grilled cod with miso-lime sauce. Both meals tool about 15 minutes to cook and came with easy to follow instructions. Calories are also included on the dishes, which is actually very helpful if you’re looking for healthier options during the week. The food was totally delicious and packed with flavour!

FrescoChef launches on Monday 15th March and you can find out more on its website: frescochef.

Lemon Roll Bakes

There have been a LOT of independent cakeries popping up throughout lockdown which is so amazing to see, but unfortunately, they aren’t all good. One of the best I’ve tried in a long time is Lemon Roll Bakes, a new business set up by a lovely lady called Hannah. You’ll find a delectable range of baked goods including cookies (literally amazing) and biscoff blondies!!! Hannah has clearly put a lot of thought into this business, and everything from her branding down the the presentation of her products are A*.

Check out Lemon Roll Bake’s website: www.lemonrollbakes.co.uk. Vegan and gluten free options catered for, yay!

Menu launches & other foodie news

Nonna’s Woodfired Pizza Menu

Nonna’s in Woburn Sands has now got a wood fired pizza oven which means a new menu launch. On the menu you will find delicious pizzas, sides and cocktails for takeaway. The pizzas are really something – the dough is delicious and the toppings are different to anywhere else in MK. I tried the suckling pig pizza, a garlic bianco crème fraiche base, smoked Scamorza cheese, grilled slices of succulent pork, roasted sweet honey glazed parsnips, and caramelised white onion and apple chutney, finished with pork crackling dust.

The menu is available from 5:30pm and you can order directly or via Uber Eats. On Tuesdays, any pizza off the menu is just £10. View the menu on Nonnas’ website: nonnaswoburnsands.co.uk

Wilson’s Street Food

Wilson’s Street Food has been around since 2018m but recently Steven Wilson decided to make it his full-time job. He previously worked in construction, but is a trained chef! In November 2020, he bought a truck in to get things going and is already making waves on the local scene!

Wilson’s Street Food offer ‘bistro in a bun’, so expect wholesome, delicious filled baps that are super tasty. We tried ‘The Chicken One’, a pork patty with chicken, bacon and crispy potatoes. My goodness, it was good. Full of flavour and unlike anything else you’ll find in MK for sure! We tried the beef one too, which you will love if you love a roast dinner! I think Wilson’s Street Food are going to be big this year, so follow them on Facebook and keep an eye out for where they will appear next (They are occasionally popping up at Witan Studios at the moment, so well worth a visit to try them!)

As you can see, there are so many amazing new launches and great new foodies finds to discover this spring. Don’t forget to sign up to The Squeeze if you want to get the latest foodie news monthly. Hopefully by 12th April we will be able to enjoy at least some of our amazing independent restaurants outside. I can’t wait to see the food scene get back on it’s feet.

Which new launch are you most excited to try?

The greek takeaway on chunch st wolverton is about as greek as me. Run by the same people who own murettis italian. Even though they are albanian. Check these places out properly before you wright a legit revue. Also the greek place mentioned is poor.

Hi Wes, thanks for your comment. I am aware that it’s owned by the same people who own Murati’s, and my reviews are fully researched. I’ve been to Greece on holiday for the last 10 years, and have to say that the Greek place in Wolverton mill is pretty good. Eat is Greek is my favourite Greek in MK (as mentioned in my post!) but I like to give people options. and appreciate that not everyone has the same experience – these reviews are based on my opinion, and most people tend to find my suggestions very helpful 🙂

Hi Chris, I do use Twitter, I’m @sophie_etc_ on there but I don’t use it much, only to update on new blog posts. Most of the vendors are on Instagram and Facebook though which is why I don’t use it.

Yes, Eat Street is on Saturday 17 April 12 – 5pm most vendors you’ll need to preorder. Again though they are on Facebook, sorry!

Do you mean Eat is Greek? yes it is there. Queens Court Street food market will be open from Monday 12 April.
