Dinner at Moza Indian, Newport Pagnell

AD – My meal at Moza Indian, Newport Pagnell was complimentary in return for this review.

Milton Keynes is not short of Indian restaurants but I do often find that many are hit and miss. Mind you, having lived close to the Balti Triangle in Birmingham for three years, I can’t say the saturation is quite at the same level here in MK! Moza Indian in Newport Pagnell has been serving Indian cuisine since 2007 and recently moved to bigger premises in the old HSBC building, one of the biggest units on the high street. Following the move and renovation, the very lovely owner, Mo, invited me in to review the menu and the restaurant’s new look. Both Dan and I love a good curry so last week we popped in on a Thursday evening to dine at Moza.

The interior of the restaurant is quite spectacular. A former bank, the ceilings are very high so a mezzanine floor has been added to make the most of the space. Crystal chandeliers cascade from the ceilings and lights add some atmosphere. It was a Thursday evening when we visited so the restaurant soon started to fill up with bigger groups of people.

The menu is pretty extensive, as with most curry houses so there is something to suit every taste whether you like it hot or not! We started off with some poppadoms and a selection of dips. I don’t know about you, but I could literally just eat poppadoms and mango chutney all night! They were crisp, warm and we loved the array of sweet and spicy dips. You can’t go wrong with mango chutney!

To start, we shared vegetable samosas and prawn puree. The vegetable samosas (£3.50) left quite a bit to the imagination in terms of presentation – we really weren’t fussed about the lettuce! But the samosas themselves were tasty. The filling was lightly spiced, although the pastry was a little thinner than I’m used to but I think that’s because Saf spoils us with hers!

The Prawn Puree (£5.95) was also very tasty. Again, we weren’t that fussed about the lettuce, but the spiced prawns were tasty with a nice light kick. Puree bread is an Indian flatbread made with ghee, so it’s very rich but this wasn’t too much at all. There was a subtle sweetness in the dough and it complemented the spicy prawns really well.

For the main course, Mo recommended the Zafrani (£8.95) to Dan which was strips of chicken marinated in freshly crushed spices and aromatic herbs, then slowly cooked in a medium spicy sauce, with garlic and ginger. This was a really fresh tasting dish and you could really taste the ginger coming through. There was also some citrus flavours knocking around thanks to the aromatics used. The chicken was tender and well cooked. This would be a great option if you want to try something outside of your favourite curry dishes.

Mo served it with a side of Niramish (£3.95), a slightly dry, mixed vegetable curry which has a subtle sweetness with a little heat behind it. The vegetables complimented the curry really well and I’ll definitely be looking for this next time I go out for an Indian!

I was immediately drawn to the lamb shank (£12.95) which was slow-cooked in a rich curry sauce. I absolutely love lamb and this dish did not disappoint! I think we both preferred it to the Zafrani. The lamb melted in the mouth and the sauce was dreamy – very rich yet sweet and spicy with a nutty base. This dish would certainly be enough for two people to share with a side of rice and naan.

We shared a bowl of pilau rice and garlic naan with our main courses. The rice was a little dry but the naan was absolutely delicious and a little bit naughty…!

We couldn’t finish all of the curries, so they boxed it up for us to take away and we enjoyed it for dinner the following night.

We just about had room for dessert so finished off the meal with some mango ice cream which was perfect for cleansing the palette. To be honest, if I’m out for a curry I hardly ever have room for dessert!

We really enjoyed our meal at Moza Indian, Newport Pagnell. The food was tasty, good value and I thought it had a really nice atmosphere once it started to get busier. Moza offer takeaways and also do Banquet nights and a Sunday buffet, so if you’re looking for a big feed, definitely check them out!

The service was lovely and we were made to feel very welcome. Thank you to Mo and his team for having us!
