On Tuesday night, Harry and I headed to Jamie’s Italian in Birmingham to review the food. Although we are both fans of the restaurant (good sign – Harry is half Italian!) we were looking forward to having an excuse to try something new. We’ve been twice before and have both had exactly the same main course to eat! Jamie’s is located by the Bullring, a little way away from the hustle and bustle of the busy shoppers. It’s a lovely environment, very welcoming, relaxed and friendly with a bit of a rustic vibe going on. It’s a huge restaurant so you’re likely to find a spot to sit, however, whenever we go we always book to avoid disappointment. The staff were very helpful and friendly, attending to us very quickly and letting us know about the specials available for that day. Keep reading to find out what we thought of the food…

The food on the menu is all created from Jamie Oliver’s recipes. It’s Italian with a rustic feel, full of classic flavours and favourites! I can see why some people feel the menu is a bit limited, especially if you aren’t a fan of pasta, but I feel there is enough range on there to find something to suit everyone. To start, I went for the Crispy Squid which was served with crushed garlic mayo, chopped chilli and lemon. The squid was perfectly cooked with a nice amount of crispyness. The mayo was subtly flavoured with garlic, perfectly complimenting the squid. Harry decided on the Fresh Crab Bruschetta which was dressed with fennel, lemon and chilli. I wasn’t completely taken by it as I prefer sea food to be hot but it went down a treat with Harry. Both starters were enough to whet our appetites ready for the main course! To drink, Harry had a Moretti beer and I had a glass of the house rose – can’t go wrong at all!
I always go for the famous prawn linguine at Jamie’s, because it really is so good but this time I decided to go for something different – still pasta – but different nonetheless! After umming and ahhing over the specials I decided to go for Jamie’s Sausage Papparedelle which was a ragu of slow cooked fennel and pork sausages with chianti, parmesan and herby breadcrumbs. The pasta was so funky! I loved it because it held onto the delicious sauce and the tender sausage meat. It was kind of like a bolognese but even better. The fennel gave a bit of a kick to the sauce without adding any uncomfortable chilli heat. The sausage meat was tender and the added breadcrumbs gave it a little bit of crunchy texture. A total winner for me! Harry was won over by the Lamb Ragu on the specials menu. I always think it’s worth asking them about the specials because they always have something amazing! His dish comprised of slow cooked lamb in a tomato sauce. The lamb melted in the mouth and was incredibly flavoursome. Although the dishes don’t look like much, there certainly was enough food and we were rather full by the end of it!
I was so annoyed to be so full after my main course that I couldn’t bring myself to go for a full on dessert. I really wanted the chocolate brownie but instead I simply had a sorbet! They have different flavours every day and they were serving lemon and berry blast. Simple, but fresh and zesty to cleanse the palette after a heavy meal! Harry went for the Lemon Meringue Cheesecake which was huuuuuge! The meringue was heavenly, very light and fluffy and the cheesecake had afabulous lemony flavour. The deserts at Jamie’s really are great, so make sure you have room for them!
If you’re looking for somewhere a little bit fancier to eat with a relaxed environment and excellent food, look no further than Jamie’s Italian. The food is reasonable, tasty and guaranteed to leave you feeling satisfied! I like it because it’s a bit different to your usual chains and the food is just so good! You can find the menus and book a table on the Jamie’s Italian website.
