Afternoon Tea at French Affaire, Stony Stratford

AD – This experience was gifted in return for this review.

Happy National Afternoon Tea Week! I promised that after my review of Maaya’s Indian afternoon tea I would have another review swiftly following and I’m very excited to share a review of a very decadent afternoon tea at French Affaire in Stony Stratford. French Affaire is one of my favourite spots in Milton Keynes; it opened in December 2018 and since then has already featured in several of my MK Food Guides. Since opening, it has fast become hailed as one of the prettiest food spots in MK. And if this year hadn’t already been successful enough for French Affaire, they are also launching a brand new restaurant in Odell’s Yard called Greek Affaire – watch this space!

Run by Razvan Marcu and his wife, Anca, this little spot in Odell’s Yard is just so beautiful – and it’s certainly not style over substance! Honestly, their crepes are to die for and the dinner menu is pretty damn good too.

The afternoon tea launched earlier this year and I have been dying to give it a go, so when I was putting together ideas for my afternoon tea guide, French Affaire was top of my list. I just knew it was going to be good!

Afternoon Tea at French Affaire

The interior of French Affaire is truly stunning; pinks, pastels and botanical details make this the perfect ‘ladies that lunch’ spot. From day one the decor was on point and the food is both beautifully presented and delicious. I took my Mum along to my afternoon tea as I knew she’d appreciate the gorgeous setting!

French Affaire’s afternoon tea menu costs £28 per person for the standard offering, which features a range of savoury and sweet delights and your choice of tea or coffee. If you want to go all out, for £40 per person, you get the standard menu with a glass of champagne and foie gras served on toasted brioche bread with fig confit. Purely because it was a Wednesday afternoon, we kept things simple, though on arrival we were given a cheeky glass of champagne with a strawberry garnish – cheers!

Afternoon Tea Savoury Platter at French Affaire

As we were sipping on champagne, the savoury platter arrived. Oh my goodness, what a feast for the eyes! And so beautifully presented! As you can see, the food was presented on a perspex box with grass inside. It really made it look like a beautiful picnic. The platter consisted of the following:

  • Shiitake Mushroom and asparagus tart
  • Spinach flavoured cone with whipped goats cheese and chives
  • Mini croissant filled with honey-roasted ham, cheddar cheese and rocket
  • Profiterole filled with chicken liver parfait
  • Savoury scone with cream cheese and smoked salmon

Every piece of food had been so well crafted and generously filled. The highlights were the Shiitake mushroom tarts which had a beautifully crisp base and lovely filling; the savoury scone which was packed with salmon; and the spinach flavoured cone with whipped goats cheese. I absolutely love goats cheese so although this was rich, it was truly delicious and so cleverly put together! My Mum also loved the chicken liver parfait profiterole which was lovely and crisp, with a rich, smooth filling.

And then came the showstopping cake stand of cakes and sweet treats…

Afternoon Tea Sweets at French Affaire

I literally did all the heart eyes when this came out – it was such beautiful presentation. The birdcage style cake stand featured the following sweet treats:

  • Flower pot with white chocolate mousse and chocolate soil
  • Elderflower and Yuzu flavour macarons
  • Raspberry and creme pattissiere mini tart
  • Caramel brownie bomb
  • Raisin scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam

I am a bit more of a savoury girl than a sweet, but some of these cakes were just so delicious and I was blown away by the level of detail on some of the food. The flower pot containing white chocolate mousse was actually edible!!! I know!!!

The Raspberry and creme patissiere tart was also so delicious and had a lovely crisp pastry base. The caramel brownie bomb was so rich but so creamy – chocolate lovers will adore this. The scones which are the centrepiece of an afternoon tea, were so light and fluffy. Mum and I shared one and then took the rest home. We basically rolled out of the restaurant!

We had a pot of tea each to go with our cakes.

As you can see, the afternoon tea at French Affaire is tres, tres bon! If you are looking for the most beautiful afternoon tea in Milton Keynes that isn’t too expensive, then I would absolutely recommend French Affaire for a little slice of luxury.

Everything from the food to the service to the atmosphere was brilliant and I will definitely be heading there again and recommending everyone I meet!

Afternoon Tea at French Affaire is served on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, with sittings available from 2pm to 3:30pm. Booking is essential! It is £28 per person or £40 for champagne and Foie Gras. To book head to www.french-affaire.co.uk.
