Why I want to spend my money on experiences not things

Why I want to spend my money on experiences not things Why I want to spend my money on experiences not things Why I want to spend my money on experiences not things Why I want to spend my money on experiences not thingsDan forwarded me some cheap flights to New York one Monday morning. After a little persuasion, we suddenly found ourselves booking a trip to NYC for October.Oops.If I’m honest, I looked at the financial situation AFTER we booked the flights and it’s probably going to mean now spontaneous ASOS hauls for a while or fewer meals out. But am I that bothered about it? I don’t think I am.I read a great post by Beth Sandland about everything that is wrong with the ‘treat yourself’ mentality and how millennial spending means people end up with lower bank balances and savings. Bad day? Buy a pizza. Broke up with your boyfriend? Buy a whole new wardrobe. (This I DO advocate, however, not for longer than two months…) You get the picture. We’re left with less money to do big things because we’ve spent it on frivolous things that we’ll forget about in a few weeks time. Why I want to spend my money on experiences not things

Why I want to spend my money on experiences not thingsOkay, so where am I going with this…When I looked at the amazing trips and holidays I now have planned for this year (which still leave me with six days of annual leave, go me) I realised that this is what I want to spend my hard earned wages on. I want to spend my money on trips with people I love to places where I can make memories. Sure, a new coat, bag or snazzy pair of shoes bring a little bit of joy every now and again but that joy is relatively short-lived and there’s always going to be something else on my wishlist soon enough.Social media has become a constant assault on our brains of getting the latest and greatest thing, and almost guilt-tripping us into buying something. I’ve been guilty of buying something because I thought it would look good on my Instagram. But you know what I think would look even better? A collection of photos and memories from amazing places. Why I want to spend my money on experiences not things Why I want to spend my money on experiences not thingsMaterial objects don’t mean much in the grand scheme of things. If something was to happen to me tomorrow, I would rather have a heart and a head full of memories than a room full of trivial things that don’t mean anything.Sure, I still live at home and I still have a car to run and insure (the bane of my life) but where I can afford it, I’d rather spend my money on a trip to somewhere sunny, somewhere new and unexplored and come back with a full heart and camera roll. You just can’t put a price on memories.p.s I wrote a post all about saving money along with a free downloadable spending tracker sheet which you can grab here.
