The George Inn Maulden is a recently restored 16th century pub. Their ethos for the refurbishment was to create a ‘home from home.’ Their 122 cover restaurant also has seven boutique hotel rooms which will be up and running later.
Located just outside Ampthill in neighbouring Maulden, The George Inn is surrounded by the ancient Amptill forest which makes a magical backdrop for the country pub. At first glance, The George Inn is very much your traditional local pub, but step inside the door and you will be greeted with warm, modern decor. The inside is the complete opposite to what you might first assume a ‘pub’ to be like; there are no dark, dingy corners and every inch is lit by bright spotlights which make this a refreshing and welcoming venue for dining, a glass of wine, or a relaxing evening.
The launch menu is ever-changing as they receive feedback from their guests. Their food is classic, wholesome and not particularly fussy. The choice on the menu was varied and there was enough to suit everyone from salads to fish and chips! To start, Harry and I decided on the garlic pizza bread and the selection of meats. This was a nice simple start to our meal and worked well for sharing. The meats were a mixture of parma ham, proscuitto, chorizo and salami served with a hunk of lightly toasted bread and a balasamic-olive oil dip. The garlic pizza bread had a crispy base and had just enough garlic kick! These were washed down with a cold glass of rose and a beer.
For main, I had to have the sausages and mash – my favourite comfort food! The portions were very generous, with a giant serving of mash and three sausages – because two sausages is never enough! This was served with a thick, sweet onion gravy. You absolutely cannot go wrong with this, and the mash was spot on.
Harry decided to try one of the pizza’s. The toppings were very unique which made it a tough choice! He ended up with a Mascarpone, Nduja sausage with Sun Blushed Tomatoes and Chilli Flakes. This definitely delivered a fiery kick. This had a crispy base and just enough topping so it wasn’t too overloaded. This certainly went down well!
We just about managed to squeeze in a bit of dessert… We opted to share the ultimate classic: warm chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream. This was gooey and chewy in all the right places. Again, another classic that you can’t go wrong with.
Overall, my experience at The George Inn Maulden was nothing but positive. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the service was excellent. If you’re looking for a country pub feel with incredible food – look no further than The George.
